The Catalina Room

Welcome to Ada’s bedroom. Even though she and William had their own rooms, they would normally sleep in this room together. A hallway with closet space and Ada’s bathroom connects to William’s room. Notice that the ceiling has a slight pitch in the center to showcase the amethyst crystal chandelier, which is original to the room. Also original is the hammered Arizona copper mantel piece above the fireplace, and the beautiful border of Catalina tile surrounding the fireplace.

Ada’s sun terrace served as the sleeping porch during summer months before air conditioning. All the windows slide open, so the entire porch is screened in. They would hang large dampened sheets from all the open windows so the night breeze wouldc ome through and create an evaporative cooling effect - basically, a primitive swap cooler. January 26th, 1932 — William passed away in this room at the age of 70, which you can read about in the newspaper clipping outside the door. After his death no one in the family wanted to sleep in the room, so it was turned into a billiards room, a favorite game of William’s.
